As I read the recent story about Ian Saunders, the Evans High School senior who won a trip to the inauguration through a wager with his father, I felt compelled to share an interesting fact.

When Ian was a fifth-grader at Brookwood Elementary School, where I was the assistant principal, he announced that one day he would be the first black president. I commented that he might not be the first, but I had no doubt that he could achieve that goal if he so desired!

Even as a young student, he exemplified the qualities of academic excellence and leadership. We need to continue to watch this fine young man!
