Boating course

Thurmond Lake Sail and Power Squadron will offer its Basic Boating Course at the McCormick Public Library located at 201 Railroad Ave., McCormick, S.C. Classes are from 2-5 p.m. Feb. 24, Feb. 27, and March 3 and noon until 3 p.m. on March 6. Advance registration is required. Cost is $25 per person or $30 per couple. Baseball tryout

The Columbia County Chaos boys 10-and-under travel baseball team will be holding tryouts in March. Interested boys should be 10 or under as of May 1, 2009. Pitching is a plus. For information, call Trevor Adkins at (706) 284-7379.

Umpires sought

Free throw contest

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship will be held Feb. 7 from 9:30 a.m. until noon at Patriot's Park gym No. 1. Boys and girls ages 10-14 are eligible. Participants are required to show proof of age and parental consent. For information, call Bob Oellerich at (706) 831-1989.

Youth football

The Columbia County Area Youth Football Association (CAYFA) will hold registration for the upcoming spring youth football season for the 9-11 and 12-13 age classifications. Participants must be 13 years old or younger on Sept. 1, 2009. Registration will be held Feb. 7 and 14 at Blanchard Woods Park from 9 a.m. until noon. 5k runs

The Warriors Challenge Run will be held Jan. 31 at Barton Field on Fort Gordon. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. The run will include a timed 5k run and a formation run. Lakeside High School will hold a 5k Panther Pace Chase run on Jan. 31 to benefit its track and field program. Registration forms can be found online at www.lhspanthers.com. Late registration will be held at Panthers Stadium at 8 a.m. the day of the run. A .half-mile children's run will take place after the 5k, which starts at 9 a.m. and begins at the track. Youth soccer

The Columbia County Recreation Department is currently registering for spring soccer. Registration will be accepted at the Patriots Park administrative office, via mail or online. For information, call (706) 863-7523.

The GA-SC Bulls Soccer Club, along with the Columbia County Recreation Department, will offer a Bulls Junior Soccer Academy for ages 5-7 at Blanchard Woods Park. The academy will be offered in two sessions, with each lasting six weeks. Session I starts Feb. 4. Session II starts April 15. Cost is $65 per player for one term or $120 for both.
