Families can learn tips for maintaining healthy lifestyles next weekend at the Columbia County Library.

Doctors Hospital and Columbia County Community Events are bringing the inaugural "Growing Healthy Together" event to the Evans library Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
"What a great time for that because it's the new year, and we all have new year resolutions that we're trying to fulfill," said Anne Cordeiro, community relations manager at Doctors Hospital.
The free event will be both informative and fun, she said.
Featured activities include vision and hearing screenings for children, a health evaluation for adults, interactive exhibits on numerous health topics, healthy cooking demonstrations, emergency vehicle displays, and demonstrations emphasizing the importance of wearing seat belts and sober driving.
Cordeiro said children can bring their backpacks so the staff with Doctors Hospital's Human Motion Institute can check their weight.
Also, the 4-H Club, The Family Y, Augusta State University's Continuing Education Department and Sylvan Learning Center will be at the library as vendors. Dancers with the Columbia County Ballet will give a short performance.
The day's activities are designed for the whole family, said Cordeiro, adding that a special section with inflatables will be set up for children.
"It's not just meant to be a class lecture or anything like that," she said. "Our hope is to create an interactive experience and that when people walk away, they'll have a couple of ideas about everyday things that they can do to live healthier."
Cordeiro said she hopes the event will continue well into the future.
"It is something that we are looking forward to growing," she said. "We thought it was a great way to show families the resources available to help them live healthier lives."
