2-vehicle collision hospitalizes man

A two-vehicle wreck on Columbia Road near Belair Road on Wednesday night left a man seriously injured.

Larry Hubbard, 60, of Martinez, was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to a hospital spokesman.

The wreck occurred about 6:30 p.m. when David Faingnaert, 56, of Martinez, was turning left out of Columbia Towne Center onto Columbia Road in his Ford Explorer and collided with Hubbard's westbound Dodge Dakota pickup, said Columbia County sheriff's Deputy Bobby Bradford.

A passenger in the Dakota, a 10-year-old girl, also was taken to MCG and was listed in good condition Thursday.

Faingnaert was cited with failure to yield the right of way.

Man charged in November robbery

An Evans man surrendered to police Tuesday for his involvement in the Nov. 23 robbery of an Evans convenience store.

Jason Terrance Turner, 36, is charged with strong-arm robbery and is being held at the Columbia County Detention Center without bond.

Last month, a man bought cigarettes at TPS, 5142 Washington Road, then handed the cashier a note demanding cash.

The clerk asked him whether he was joking, but he said he wasn't, according to an incident report.

The clerk told sheriff's deputies that the robber told her "he could not get a break in life and that he was a felon."

Two men arrested after car break-in

Police arrested two men Tuesday after they were found in the parking lot of a Martinez automotive garage near a car with a shattered window.

Deputies pulled into the lot of Butler Automotive around midnight Monday and saw a white Pontiac with two men stop beside the building.

A man was in a Honda Civic that had a shattered window. When the driver of the Pontiac saw police, he tried to leave the lot. The man in the Honda ran and jumped into the Pontiac's passenger seat.

Barney Lane Bennett Jr., 26, of Evans, was identified as the driver, and Rodney Denitrice Brown, 41, of Augusta, was identified as the passenger. They told deputies they had nothing to do with the break-in were taken to the Columbia County Detention Center.

Bennett was charged with entering an auto to commit theft and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. He was released Tuesday on $9,200 bond.

Brown was charged with entering an auto to commit theft and possession of tools for the commission of a crime; he is being held for violation of parole.

A rubber mallet was found in the Honda and was determined to have been used during the break-in.

Vandals damage vacant trailer home

A 33-year-old man told police Wednesday that someone had damaged his vacant mobile home on Old Augusta Highway near Grovetown.

TheBlythe man said that between 4 p.m. Monday and 4 p.m. Wednesday, someone punched and kicked several holes into the walls of the living room, dining room, master bedroom, kitchen and spare bedroom.

He said he was remodeling the trailer and had left the front door unlocked.

Several mailboxes reported damaged

Eleven mailboxes were reported damaged in Martinez between 11 p.m. Wednesday and midnight Thursday. Three incidents were reported on Valdes Drive; two each on Wesley Drive and Pine Hurst Drive; and one each on Kenne Street, Casa Rosa Avenue, Brockwood Street and Maywood Drive.
