The falling price of gasoline has been a tremendous blessing in recent weeks, even if it comes amidst growing economic worries.
//
The downside of lower fuel costs is that it reduces the "drill here, drill now" momentum that had been building for American energy independence.
Despite lower gas prices that make travel tempting, the generally worrisome economy can have another effect right here in Columbia County by encouraging Christmas shoppers to spend close to home.
Encouraging citizens to shop locally is nothing new, but it has special urgency these days. When shoppers are more frugal overall, it becomes increasingly important to keep more of that money in our own community.
This isn't just about sales tax dollars, either, though that's an important factor. Sales in Columbia County provide funding for projects benefiting the county's citizens and schools.
Those hometown sales also are important for keeping money in local businesses, in our local economy - and even with less-expensive fuel, the gas savings from shopping close to home are well worth it.
When possible during the Christmas season, it wouldn't hurt to keep hometown benefits in mind. Shop here; shop now.
