MONDAY: A drought information workshop and public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at McCormick Middle School gym in McCormick, S.C. The event, which is sponsored by Friends of the Savannah River Basin and U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, will include a discussion by Col. Edward J. Kertis, commander of the Savannah District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the water management team from Savannah. Topics will include the corps' drought management policies, lake level predictions and the ongoing environmental assessment that could lead to flow reductions into the Savannah River. The meeting will be in the school's gymnasium and will include information booths and opportunities to discuss issues and ask questions. FRIDAY: The Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society's ninth annual "Auction for Education" will be held at the North Augusta Community Center. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m. and live auctions begin at 7. Items up for grabs include golf packages, guided canoe trips, theater tickets, framed art and photos, wine and jewelry. Proceeds will benefit environmental education programs in area schools. SATURDAY-SUNDAY: Hill's Landing on the Diversion Canal in Cross, S.C., will hold its sixth annual " BIG CAT" Catfish Tournament. To make lodging reservations of for more information, call Jamie Courtney at (843) 753-2731.

NOV. 18: The Sierra Club's Savannah River group will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Walton Way Extension. The program includes a presentation from Appalachian Voices, an advocacy group fighting mountain top coal removal. This issue affects not only global warming, but has social consequences as well. Many power plants in Georgia burn coal from this type of mining. The public is welcome. For more information, contact Judy Gordon at (706) 650-8314.

DEC. 6: Phinizy Swamp Nature Park will hold its third annual 10K December Dash beginning at 9 a.m. at the park off Lock and Dam Road. The course goes through scenic outdoor environments. Call (706) 828-2109 to sign up, or register online at www.active.com.
