One can imagine that the 11 disciples might have had this conversation if they had the faith and principles practiced by many of today's Republicans:
Peter: "What shall we do with Judas after his treachery?"
James: "We can't boot Judas out. He is our intermediary to the Romans."
John: "Indeed. Our party cannot dilute its power by losing Judas. Getting the 30 pieces of silver proves he has the connections to gain influence at the highest levels in Jerusalem. He has the ear of Pilate himself!"
Mark: "Judas got 30 pieces of silver? Ha! His son works for the money-changers who are itching to get back into the temple now that Jesus is out of the way. Thirty pieces of silver is just the beginning. Rumor has it that they guaranteed Bo Iscariot that his father would never want again, if only he would sell Jesus out."
Luke: "That does it for me. Judas remaining allows us a critical number in our party to keep our power and influence. Let's take a secret vote."
The vote would have been that Judas got to stay in the Jesus party until he proved to be the only one left with a conscience by killing himself.
Today, Georgians who call themselves Christians and conservatives have a very similar choice. They can vote for Saxby "Judas" Chambliss for the sake of power and influence, or they can vote against the treachery that he represents.
When Jesus encountered money-changers in the temple, he chased them and cast them out, flailing away at the scoundrels. Chambliss to all Georgians is Judas, the tool of the money-changers. He has sold us out for money repeatedly.
Holding forth that he is critical to maintaining the ability of conservatives to filibuster by denying the Democrats 60 votes is simply wishful thinking. Chambliss will cast his vote the way the money-changers tell him.
He has done it repeatedly. He will betray you and your family again, if you give him the chance.
Let's give Saxby the boot.
