Augusta State sophomore Carter Newman, of Evans, posted his best career finish for the school's men's golf team at this year's Duke Coca-Cola Individual Collegiate.

The former junior golf star posted rounds of 73-71-75 to tie for third at 6-over, five shots out of the lead.

Newman played in six events as a freshman last season, posting a 75.04 scoring average with a low round of 69. A year ago, his best finish also came in October. He finished fifth at the Mizuno Southbridge Intercollegiate in Savannah with rounds of 69-73-70.

ASU has one more fall event. The Jaguars travel to San Martin, Calif., on Nov. 3-5 for the CordeValle Collegiate at CordeValle Country Club. Their spring schedule begins in February at the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

Evans climbs in polls

The 6-0 start for the Evans football team did not go unnoticed. Coach Marty Jackson's Knights entered the state rankings two weeks ago at No. 9 in the Class AAAA Poll. This past week, they rose to No. 8.

After Evans' 35-10 win over Westside, the Knights' defense was yielding less than a touchdown a game. The Knights have a shot at their first unbeaten regular season since 1987. They were 10-0 in 1986 and 1987.

Evans hasn't won 10 regular-season games since going 10-2 in 1995. That team was led by all-state tailback Zach Scott and posted two wins over perennial power Northside Warner Robins. The Knights were eliminated in the state playoffs by Forest Park in a 36-35 heartbreaker.
