Nearly 30 animals will be available this weekend at the Columbia County Animal Care and Control's semiannual pet adoption event, where fees are reduced and special incentives offered.

During the two-day event, puppies, kittens, dogs and cats will be available for adoption at less than half of the usual fee. Adult dogs and cats usually adopt out for $25, and kittens and puppies adopt out for $20. During this event, all dogs and puppies can be adopted for $10, while cats and kittens can be adopted for $5.
"We just want to get them out of here; the more, the better," Columbia County Animal Care and Control clerk Vicki Milford said. "We'd like for all of them to find a good home."
Milford said special adoption events are held twice each year -- in April and again in October -- with the goal of adopting out as many animals as possible. There are about 10 dogs and 20 cats waiting to be adopted.
The reduced-fee adoptions will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All pets adopted will receive a free identification tag, which will be engraved on the spot.
People who want to visit the kennel area must wear closed shoes, as required by state law. That means no sandals, flip-flops or Crocs-type shoes are allowed.
