Columbia County Animal Care and Control will hold a special pet adoption event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the shelter on Columbia Road in Appling. Dogs and puppies will be available for $10; cats and kittens for $5. All pets adopted Oct. 6-11 will receive a free engraved pet identification tag and a 2009 pet calendar. Contestants ages 17-24 are being sought for the Columbia County Merchants Association 2008 Miss Columbia County Fair Scholarship Pageant, to be held Oct. 25.
