Duck recipe wins at Wildwood

Threatening skies and scarce gas supplies took the blame Saturday for low turnout at the inaugural Sportsman Festival at Wildwood Park, but the weather was just fine for a group of competitive cooks.

The Fin, Fur and Feather Cook-off drew five cooking teams to the park to produce their best variations on wild game.

Winning the overall prize -- along with $500 -- was the Gold Mech team, whose grilled duck breast also won in the "feather" category.

The Killer Bees -- Jim Burge, Jane Burge, Billy King and Dana Guy -- won the "fin" category with a crawfish dish, and took first prize in the "fur" category for a venison tenderloin dish.

A win in each category brought with it a trophy and a $200 prize.

"We thought we were doing good until he (Steven Shawver of the Gold Mech team) gave us his duck recipe," Jane Burge.

Shawver also exercises his culinary skills for such cooking events as the Southern National and Cooking For Kids.
