Teens hoping to acquire new skills, or just socialize, can do just that with two upcoming events at the Columbia County Library.
//
Columbia County residents ages 12 to 18 can participate in the teen advisory board's first meeting of the school year. The group will gather downstairs in the library's meeting room 2 p.m. Sunday.
"We meet once a month," said young adult librarian Christy Taylor-Pruitt. "We discuss programming, so they have a lot of input on the programs that we have.
"They also provide a liaison between the schools and the library for cooperative ventures."
The group is instrumental in planning teen programming, Taylor-Pruitt said.
Parental permission is required for joining the board.
"There's a form in the teen center that they can take home with them and have their parents sign," she said.
Ten to 15 teenagers usually attend the meetings of the group, which started three years ago.
"I want to improve the young adult collection with new and updated materials that the students need and are interested in," Taylor-Pruitt said.
Also on Sunday, residents ages 12 to 18 are invited to take part of a scrapbooking social 3-4:30 p.m. in the library's downstairs meeting room.
"We're doing it because it's the very beginning of the school year," Taylor-Pruitt said. "They can go ahead and set up their scrapbooks, so that when they take pictures all year long, they've already got the scrapbook set up."
She said the library will provide materials and supplies, but teens can bring photographs, artwork and other items.
"There will be some digital scrapbooking involved, and we also have books on scrapbooking that they can check out and take home with them," she said. "Every teen that I know loves to takes pictures."
Registration is required, and Taylor-Pruitt said many spots should still be available.
Taylor-Pruitt said she hopes the teens "improve their scrapbooking skills, make lasting memories of their school year and just enjoy a good time in the library."
To register, call the library's reference desk at (706) 863-1946.
