Evans Knights coaches prepare
"Everybody's bigger than us and everybody's faster than us," is the way Evans football coach Jim Connor summed up the opposition the Knights will face during the coming football season. "But we'll be there."
The Evans starting line has only two players who weigh more than 200 pounds, head coach Billy Beale noted. And Beale has only 14 lettermen returning on his 45-man roster. "We'll be aggressive," he promised.
The offense will have three returning starters: Gary Dobos, Tim Cotton and Butch Boyd. Defensive backs on the first squad will be Darryl Hoyt, Walter Taylor, Bart Chandler and Roger Gray. Other leads are yet to be decided.
Teachers attend in-service program
More than 200 reading teachers in Columbia County attended a reading in-service program at Grovetown Elementary School during pre-planning last week in preparation for the coming school year.
Superintendent of Schools John Pierce Blanchard made the presentation of Columbia County's reading program, which included the program philosophy.
"The public schools of Columbia County have long recognized that the discipline of reading is the most important discipline in the instructional program of the school system." Blanchard said. "Therefore, professional research was utilized in developing a reading program that is recognized and accepted by professional educators as an adequate program for the teaching of reading."
Columbia County students consistently score above state averages and within the range of national norms on standardized tests of reading comprehension.
Troop chartered
A charter presentation was given for Boy Scout Troop 66 last week.
Begun in May this year with eight members, Troop 66 has increased its membership to 16.
The Martinez troop, sponsored by Our Savior Episcopal Church, received its charter Aug. 23 at a brief ceremony held at the church. District Commissioner Taylor Powell officiated and presented the charter.
