I have been a neonatal nurse for 27 years. Nursing jobs are constantly changing and are evolving into highly specialized areas of practice. Nurses are receiving highly skilled training at the bedside to keep up with technology. As most people have come to realize, there is also a nursing shortage. The shortage of registered nurses (RNs) in the U.S. could reach as high as 500,000 by 2025, according to a report released by Dr. Peter Buerhaus and colleagues in March 2008. During my career, in order to help fulfill one of these needs, I received ongoing training and eventually became a neonatal transport nurse.

Clark service award created
Letitie Clark (left), mother of slain Virginia Tech student Ryan Clark, and Julie Miller, Columbia County Family Connections coordinator, announced the creation of the Ryan Clark Community Service Award at a news conference at Lakeside High School on Monday. The recipient will be named in May.

Teachers treated to lunch
A group of teachers from Grovetown Elementary enjoy lunch at Grovetown City Hall provided by the Grovetown Museum. The Board of Directors of the museum hosted the event for the teachers to show their appreciation for the job they do and to acquaint them with the features of the museum.

The Columbia County Ponytails clinched their state championship by scoring 45 runs and allowing only one run in the playoffs. They traveled to Pineville, La., for the World Series Championship. Olympian honored at school
Teresa Jordan's class at Lakeside Middle School stands in front of the display case on Red, White and Blue Day in honor of Reese Hoffa, who placed seventh in the 2008 Olympic shot put finals in Beijing. Hoffa was in the eighth grade at the school in 1993 and was on the baseball, football and basketball teams.

Anything that will take the "search" out of "search and rescue" is good. So first we have to always know where we are and then have a communications link for the rescue part.
Evans, Greenbrier softball teams eye state title
As all eyes focus on the gridiron for the start of the 2008 football season, a group of young ladies continue to labor in a bit of obscurity. The group I'm referring to is the softball teams at Evans and Greenbrier high schools.
