World is 'messed up' when kittens can be thrown from moving vehicles
As I read over the "Adopt a Pet" section for the Columbia County Humane Society July 20, I was sickened to read at the bottom, "Kittens are thrown from moving cars."

The young eventually age, take over and then become old themselves and have to put up with the new younger generation.

Butcher is Olympics judge
Steve Butcher, the regional manager and director of gymnastics operations for Premier Athletics, was selected by the International Gymnastics Federation to judge the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Only two U.S. judges are among the 50 men's judges worldwide for the 2008 Olympic Games. Butcher is a member of the USA gymnastics board of directors/executive committee and the president of the men's technical committee for the Pan American Gymnastics Union, where he oversees competitions among North, South and Central America. As a coach, he has produced several U.S. gymnastics junior national team members, one Olympic gymnast (John Macready in 1996), and scores of NCAA gymnasts and cheerleaders. Butcher works with staffers and athletes at the Premier Athletics gyms nationwide and as a regular clinician nationally and internationally.

Man charged in fatal shooting after fight

Harbin Honored
State Rep. Ben Harbin recently was honored by two of Georgia's disability organizations, the Albany Advocacy Resource Center and Easter Seals Southern Georgia. Harbin has been an advocate for children and adults with disabilities during his tenure in the state House and was instrumental in funding needed services for Georgians on the waiting list, the groups said. With Harbin are Beth English, executive director of Easter Seals Southern Georgia, and Annette Bowling, executive director of the Albany ARC.

More work needed to eliminate dividers
The Columbia County commission chairman didn't fight the battle single-handed. But Ron Cross deserves a lot of credit for getting Georgia's Department of Transportation to agree to a center turn lane rather than a concrete divider for a small part of Flowing Wells Road.

'New beginning' at Augusta Christian
When Augusta Christian Schools opens its doors for another year on Monday, 500 to 600 students in grades K-12 will be converging together on the 26-acre campus at 313 Baston Road in Martinez.

Sink or swim for pool vote?
So, it looks like there's a pretty good chance Columbia County commissioners will allow voters in November to decide whether they want to raise their taxes to build an indoor swimming pool.

Georgia Rockers earn second place
The Georgia Rockers Gold 14-and-under Fast Pitch Softball team took home the second-place trophy from the World Fast Pitch Connection World Series in Savannah, Ga. The World Series tournament was a weeklong event with teams coming from as far away as Ohio and Indiana. The team nearly won it all, losing only 5-4 in the bottom of the last inning.
