UGA summa cum laude graduates

Three Columbia County residents were among 35 University of Georgia graduates who received First Honor Graduation distinctions at the May 10 commencement exercises. The university awards this honor to students who maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout their undergraduate studies. These students graduated summa cum laude and ranked in the top 1 percent of the 3,500-member graduating class. The Columbia County graduates are:
Jessica Michelle Bryant , cellular biology, daughter of Jack and Joan Bryant, Evans; Anant Mandawat , biochemistry and molecular biology, son of Mahendra and Rama Mandawat, Martinez; and Tyler Blalock Pratt , international affairs, son of Mark and Stephanie Pratt, Martinez.
College graduates
Natalie Ann Pippin , of Evans, received a bachelor's degree in religious studies and graduated with high honors and was named outstanding female graduate of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., at the school's May 10 graduation ceremony. She also was named to the dean's list.
David Matthew Lane , of Martinez, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in speech communication from Valdosta State University during spring commencement exercises.
Caroline Hiatt and William Kitchens , both of Evans, recently graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans.
Andrew Fisher, of Martinez, has graduated magna cum laude with honors from Wake Forest University with a degree in mathematical economics. He will attend graduate school at The London School of Economics in the fall. Andrew is a 2004 graduate of Augusta Christian School.
Robin L. Reif, of Evans, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art and design from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, in New York, during commencement exercises May 17. Robin is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey L. Reif of Evans. She is a graduate of Greenbrier High School.
John A. Gleason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel T. Gleason of Evans, received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in economics degree at its commencement ceremony May 3, 2008.
The following local students graduated from the University of West Georgia at the commencement ceremonies May 10: Jayne Marie Stafford of Evans, Master of Arts in psychology; and Laura Elizabeth Carpent Ellington of Martinez, Bachelor of Fine Arts in art.
Gregory A. Ryan , of Evans, recently graduated from Georgia Southwestern State University and was named to the President's List for the spring 2008 semester.
Mary E. Mangum , daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Mangum of Martinez, graduated from Furman University after spring of 2008.
University honors
Caitlyn E. Cota and Brianna R. Lowrie , both of Martinez, have been inducted into the Samford University chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta honor society for freshmen.
Elizabeth M. Wolfe, of Evans, daughter of Stephen and Desiree Wolf, has been named to the Dean's List at Augusta State University for spring semester 2008. Elizabeth is a junior majoring in accounting.
Megan Nicole Brooks, a 2007 graduate of Evans High School and the daughter of Greg and Teresa Brooks, has been named to the Dean's List at the University of Georgia for spring semester 2008.
Larrie C. Reece, of Evans, has been named to the spring 2008 President's List at the University of Mobile.
Rebekah Elizabeth Bearden and Virginia Ellen Wright, both of Evans, have been named to the spring 2008 Dean's List at North Greenville University.
Anna Courtney Baker, of Augusta, daughter of Emily Baker, has been named to the spring 2008 Dean's List at Berry College.
Brian Maleck , a 2007 graduate of Lakeside High School, achieved Dean's List recognition for the spring 2008 semester at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Brian is a civil engineering major at the Troy, N.Y., college.
Kara Hartman , of Appling, and Laura Elizabeth Ellington, of Martinez, were named to the spring 2008 Dean's List at the University of West Georgia.
Alyssa H. Prater , of Appling and Mollie Kathleen Eidson , of Grovetown have been named to the Dean's List for spring 2008 at Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.
Laura Vann , of Augusta, was named to the Dean's List at Lynn University for spring 2008. Laura is a senior majoring in journalism and mass communication.
Rachel Ryan , of Evans, has been named to the Dean's List of Freed-Hardeman University for spring 2008. Rachel, a sophomore English major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Ryan.
UGA Presidential Scholars
The following students have been named to the Presidential Scholar List for the 2008 spring term at the University of Georgia: Harlem: Jessica Annis Price; Evans: Jonathan Kent Barefield, Mallory Susan Farmer, Caleb John Mellinger, Sharon Aileen McCoy, Sarah Asna Ahmed; Martinez: Alison Cowles Evans, Elizabeth Anne Gardner, Muktha Sundar Natrajan, Janki Vinod Chudgar, Rachel Maria Howard, Brenton Carter Lake and Stephen Joshua Walton.

John Harris graduated from McCallie School, a college preparatory school for boys in Chattanooga, Tenn., on May 18. While at McCallie, John has been an honor roll student and president of the Senate. Next year he will attend the University of North Carolina as a Robertson Scholar. John is the son of Mark and Beth Harris of Evans.

The United States Achievement Academy announced that Devan Singh, son of Dr. Sonjoy and Rachna Singh, of Lewiston, New York; grandson of Subhash and Shakun Kharbanda of Martinez, and Gurdev and Veena Singh of Lewiston, N.Y., has been named an All-American Scholar.
