Sales tax meeting tests high-tech survey system
The first public hearing for discussion of Columbia County's proposed sales tax referendum included a high-tech twist. Residents attending Thursday evening's session at Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center in Evans were able to vote from their seats using portable electronic devices.

Old faces fill school board ballot
Columbia County residents can expect to see plenty of familiar faces on the school board next year. Four of the five seats will be on the general election ballot in November, and only the incumbents qualified to run for the spots.

2 board members OK digest
Columbia County school board members Regina Buccafusco and Mildred Blackburn agreed at a tax digest hearing Monday to keep the millage at 17.09 for 2008-09.

Twelve students from Augusta Technical College's adult education class at Marvin United Methodist Church received their GED diplomas during commencement exercises June 20.

Blue Ridge Elementary presents play
Blue Ridge Elementary first-graders performed the play The Color Factory, for students and parents May 12. The play helped the children learn how to combine various colors to make new ones.

Evans JROTC takes title
A ring ceremony was held at Evans High School last month in honor of Evans' JROTC state championship drill team. It was the first state championship for the girls drill team and the fourth consecutive state championship for the boys drill team.

Joya Rhodes, with Shepeard Community Blood Center, draws blood from Jerry Newman during the EMA Community Summer Blood Drive. There were 55 blood donors at the Roads & Bridges Department in Appling and a total of 201 for both days of the summer blood drive.

Police blotter
A man riding a personal watercraft was airlifted to Medical College of Georgia Hospital on Saturday after falling off and injuring his head at Wildwood Park, a Columbia County Sheriff's Office dispatcher said.

Time to proudly celebrate freedom
Think about it: July 4, Independence Day. Do your children even know what we're celebrating, or do they think we go to firework displays and eat hot dogs and hamburgers on the same date every year just because we feel like it?

Get cracking on maple bats
Major League Baseball officials are considering new rules or an outright ban on maple bats. Unlike traditional ash bats, maple bats don't just crack and split when they break. Maple can splinter into sharp shards that fly at players and fans.

Leave fireworks to professionals
We're going to ask you not to use fireworks this Independence Day. And many of you will totally ignore it. Just on the small hope that someone will be swayed, however, we strongly urge parents to resist the whining from junior and leave the Fourth fireworks to the professionals.

The Columbia County Junior Golf Championship, in its second year, drew about 120 golfers, all of whom played and dined for free.
