Juniors golfers enjoy free round and a meal

As the young golfers filed off the back deck at Bartram Trail Golf Course on Thursday, they were encouraged to try to thank the tournament's sponsors if they got a chance.

The Columbia County Junior Golf Championship, in its second year, drew about 120 golfers, all of whom played and dined for free.

Five different age groups competed, and while the high school-age groups drew the most entrants, many of the area's younger golfers also came out to enjoy free competition.

Carter Mobley captured first place in the 11-12 age division with steady nine-hole rounds of 36-36. The Augusta Prep pupil was named the 10-and-under player of the year for 2007-08 by the Augusta Area Golf Association. Michael Cheesborough followed a first-round 38 with 44, but he held on to win the 9-10 age group by a shot over Justin Kim.

Kendall Mann ran away with the trophy for the 6-8 age division. He shot a two-day total of 74 to win by nine shots. The 8-year-old won the inaugural Columbia County Junior last year after firing 73.
