Another state championship trophy belongs to Augusta Prep.
The Lady Cavaliers volleyball team picked up its second consecutive state title during the weekend with an undefeated march through the GISA Class AAA state tournament. Augusta Prep knocked off North Cobb Christian in a three-game sweep in the finals to claim the championship in front of a home crowd.
"We needed those fans. They were amazing," Augusta Prep senior Nicole Abbott said. "The atmosphere in there was crazy. There's nothing to compare to that."

In the end, the Cavaliers prevailed 3-2 after Kemper Peacock wrapped up her No. 3 singles match with a 12-10 win in the second set.
The state title was nice, but Prep coach Chris Dickson almost seemed more excited about the team's 3-2 semifinal win against Deerfield-Windsor, which had beaten the Cavaliers in the state final the past two seasons.
"That was a big win, just to get the monkey off the back," Dickson said. "It was really good to send them home."
Augusta Prep senior Lee Knox fired 68 to win medalist honors at the GISA Class AAA state golf tournament at Doublegate Golf and Country Club in Albany.
The Cavaliers finished third as a team with a score of 312, four shots out of a playoff for first. Deerfield-Windsor eventually prevailed.

Amanda Matheson has been dancing since she was 3 years old.
The Augusta Prep senior says the skills she uses on the dance floor have helped her performance as an athlete.
"I think it just helps with knowing how to land and takeoff," Matheson said.
Matheson and teammate Maryclaire Regan led all female athletes during Thursday's Georgia Independent Schools Association Region 4-AAA track meet, propelling the Prep girls squad to a team win.
Spotlight: Emily Helmich

Fast forward two years and Helmich not only wanted to play, she wanted to score. She felt her teammates weren't giving her the opportunity, so she talked to coach Forrest Wimberly.
"'Coach, they're passing the ball to my left foot,'" Wimberly remembered her telling him last year. " 'I'm partially paralyzed on the left side of my body. They've got to play it to my right foot.' I said 'Well, Emily, I hear you. I believe you. I know exactly what you mean. But let's have you tell them.'
"She said, 'Do I have to?' I said, 'Yeah.' "
So Helmich addressed her teammates in Atlanta before they played Mount Vernon. She told them she needed the ball on her right foot, and that they weren't listening when she called for the ball.
Helmich has cerebral palsy. She hadn't scored a goal since kindergarten.
