Authorities have identified a man who died in a Thurmond Lake drowning incident during the weekend. Edtwon Jamar Jackson, 22, of Thomson, died Saturday in the Lake Springs area, said Pam Tucker, Columbia County emergency management director.

Episcopal Day School wins tennis championship
Episcopal Day School's boys tennis team won the Greater Augusta-Aiken Independent School League Championship with a win over St. Mary's of Augusta in the finals.

Ballot questions test public pulse
With absentee ballots already available, voting in the July 15 primary has begun in Columbia County. In local elections, not a single Democratic candidate is on the ballot, so the July 15 Republican primary will decide who wins most races.
County picked party hopefuls
As the presidential elections head toward November, Republicans long ago settled on their candidate. The Democrats finally picked their nominee only after weeks of chaos. If they'd listened to Columbia County, this would have all been finished five months ago.

Knights get ahead with local recruiting
The Aiken Tech fast-pitch softball program is just 4 years old, but already it has reeled off back-to-back 30-win seasons. One of the keys to the program's early success has been the decision to recruit in Columbia County.
Augusta Prep will hold its Middle School Baseball Camp June 23-27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 5-8. Cost is $160 for the week or $40 per day.
Region title punctuates year
The Bulldogs won the Region 3-AAA baseball championship, their first region title since 2001, and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs.
Showings are strong in swimming, track
Ten Columbia County athletes competed in the Special Olympics State Games held May 30-June 1 in Atlanta.
Mets win championship
The Mets baseball team finished its undefeated season with a championship win June 11 to become Columbia County's 8-year-old boys machine pitch champions. The team outscored their opponents 242 to 27, including pre- and post-season games.
Gordon Park Racing Results
Local driver Bob Robertson powered the No. 14 Cabinets By Design-sponsored Crate Late Model to his first win at Gordon Park this year.
