Teens looking for fun can beat the summer heat by heading to the Columbia County Library this month.

Children 12 to 18 are invited to participate in three programs hosted by the library.

The library's Teen Poetry Slam will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the downstairs meeting room.

"It's just like a poetry reading in a coffeehouse setting," said young adult librarian Christy Iler. "They will come in and share their poetry."

The library also will host a Teen Idol program June 19 at 3 p.m. in the meeting room.

Iler said the event will look similar to American Idol .

Each participant will choose a song to sing on a karaoke machine and compete in different rounds, depending on the number of participants.

"If they want to bring their own material, they can," Iler said. "If they wanted to bring their own CD, that would be fine."

Employees from the library, as well as members of the Friends of Columbia County Libraries, will judge the contest.

On June 29, the library will hold a Guitar Hero Competition at 3 p.m.

Participants will compete against each other in the library's meeting room by playing the popular video game, Guitar Hero II .

Iler wants young adults to know that the library offers more than just books.

"They can come into the library and find that the library staff really wants to help them and work with them and teach them how to have fun in the library," Iler said.

Registration for each pro-gram in June is required. To register for any of the events, call the library at (706) 863-1946, or sign up at the library's reference desk. The library is located at 7022 Evans Town Center Blvd. in Evans.
