Plant opens retail shop to sell pecans
Two businesses in Columbia County recently decided to provide customers with new services. Lucky Lady Pecans, Gifts and More, the retail shop of the Tracy-Luckey Co., celebrated a grand opening May 3 in a new location.

Jewish Community Center to mark Israel's 60th anniversary

Culpepper is sworn in as Harlem mayor
Harlem has a new mayor. Bobby Culpepper, the lone candidate to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Scott Dean, was sworn into office Friday at Harlem City Hall. Culpepper's name still will be on the July 15 special election ballot, but he has already officially accepted the job.

Pupils compete in eco-challenge
Middle school pupils from eastern Georgia and South Carolina recently converged in Thomson for the eighth annual Eco-Meet Challenge.

Free ballet production ends season
The Columbia County Ballet will end its season with a free outdoor production Saturday followed by a recognition of its students. "It's a celebration," said Ron Jones, the ballet's artistic director. "It's the end of the school year. It's the end of the ballet season."

Irish duo to perform Saturday
An Irish concert postponed in April because one of the musicians had to have an appendectomy has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday at the Quest Church facility in the Columbia Square shopping center.

The Columbia County Board of Elections will hold voter registration drives from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the Circle K in Appling, May 24 at Kmart in Martinez, and 6-9 p.m. May 24 at Columbia County's Red, White and Blue Veterans Celebration in Evans.

Split Rail performed Thursday evening at the amphitheater in Evans as part of Columbia County's Country Music Concert Series.

Williams nominated for award

The waiting (for the mail) game
Most of the time, six days a week, the familiar, boxy U.S. mail truck stops at my mailbox with hour-before-noon precision. Mail arrives and, without a trip to the post office, my outgoing mail starts on its merry cross-town or cross-country way.

Harlem High's Morgan will take soccer career to ABAC
Meagan Morgan spent the majority of her soccer days in goal before this year, but the Harlem senior was needed in the field, and she obliged. "She understood," Harlem coach George Berry said. "She's been a team player ever since she's been in middle school."

Camp Calendar
Augusta Prep will hold its Middle School Baseball Camp June 23-27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 5-8. Cost is $160 for the week or $40 per day.

Bulldogs again to take on nemesis
Harlem and its second-round opponent in the Class AAA state playoffs have a history the Bulldogs probably would rather forget. For the past two years, Troup has been the team to send Harlem home, and it will have the opportunity again today at 3 p.m. in Harlem.
