Kite flyers win

Columbia Square merchants and the Columbia County Recreation Department co-sponsored the first annual Kite Flying Contest on April 5, 1975. Some 50 participants, along with 150 spectators, were on hand for the event.

Winners of the contest, held in the Columbia Square parking lot, included Steve Griffin and Robert Waldera, tied for first place in the 10-under division; Cleave Collins, first place, 11- to 15-year-olds; and Roger and James McConell, first place in parent and child division.

Sports banquet set

John Small of the Detroit Lions was the guest speaker at the first annual Evans Junior High School all-sports banquet held March 18, 1975.

Coaches Gene Hair and Sherry Kasner presented awards in football to Butch Boyd as best defensive player, Ronald Stanford as best offensive player, and Roger Gray as most valuable player.

The MVP award in basketball went to Ricky Leverett and Helen Dent.

STARS honored

Columbia County STAR students and teachers for the 1975 school year were recognized and honored by the Board of Education in its regular monthly meeting.

Guy Bass and Clark Neal shared the title of STAR student for Harlem High School, and Tracie Brown and Gary Gray shared the title of STAR student for Evans High School.

Each student chose the STAR teachers they felt had made a special contribution to their education. STAR teachers selected for Harlem High School were Inez Brown and Wanda Hurst. Maxanne Allmond and Martha Jane Henry were selected as STAR teachers for Evans.

Billy Becton, plant manager for the Thomson Co., presented each STAR student and teacher with a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

Students score high

Since 1971, a comprehensive battery of achievement tests have been given to selected grades in all Georgia school systems. Columbia County students have consistently scored above state average on these tests.

The 1975 results reveal that once again the averages for the Columbia County system are above state averages. These scores indicate an overall gain in achievement level and a very favorable comparison with national norms.
