AARP Tax Aide is offering free tax preparation and e-filing for seniors and middle- and low-income residents from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Columbia County Library, (706) 863-1946; from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays at the Euchee Creek Library, (706) 556-0594; and by appointment from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the H2U building of Doctors Hospital, (706) 651-6716.

Scholarships

The annual Fort Gordon Sergeants Major Association scholarship essay competition will be held through May 31, with three $500 scholarships available to Augusta-area high school graduates who do not need to be affiliated with the military to apply. Applications are available from Army Community Services, Room 224, Darling Hall, on Chamberlain Ave. or online at www.sergeantsmajor.com at SMA Essay Competition. For information, call Command Sgt. Democrats meet

Ted Terry, the field organizer for the Democratic National Committee, will be the guest speaker at the April meeting of the Columbia County Democratic Party at 7 p.m. Monday at the Columbia County Government Complex Auditorium in Evans. Pond school

Children ages 5 and older are invited to learn about aquatic life at Reed Creek Park from 4:30-5:30 p.m. April 16. The session is free, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required by calling (706) 210-4027.
