Brock Poole didn't eat an ordinary egg for breakfast Saturday morning.

Poole consumed the 1 millionth egg served at Sunrise Grill in West Town Market Square in Martinez.

Poole and his 15-month-old son, Nolan, were served their meal and then rewarded with an antique egg basket full of Sunrise Grill gear, including jams, gift certificates, a coffee mug and apparel.

Poole said he was not previously aware of the millionth-egg countdown.

"I was really surprised it was me," he said. "It caught me off guard."

Ron and Chris Gurley, owners of the restaurant, started keeping track of the eggs soon after the restaurant opened in 2003.

"We were just keeping an egg count," Ron Gurley said, "and we didn't even really have a million in mind until we started getting close."

An electronic banner hangs on the restaurant's back wall and monitors the number of eggs that have been served to customers. The banner is updated each week, Gurley said.

Though the 1 millionth egg may be hard to top, Gurley plans to continue the egg countdown.

"Two million might not be as exciting as 1 million," he said.
