The first day of spring won't arrive until March 20, but members of the Martinez-Evans Rotary Club are starting early with their annual Spring Fling event.

"This is our big fund-raiser," said Ricardo Bravo, the club's president-elect.

The Spring Fling features an evening of heavy hors d'oeuvres and the jazz sounds of Fred Williams.

The event begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at Savannah Rapids Pavilion.

Bravo said the Spring Fling, which has been held annually for about a decade, includes a silent auction and a raffle for the Windsor Jewelers treasure chest.

Windsor donates jewelry and other items to the event, including Waterford crystal, Bulova clocks, watches, diamond jewelry, and jewelry by designers David Yurman, John Hardy and Charriol.

The chest includes $5,000 worth of items. Raffle tickets cost $50 each.

All proceeds from the event benefit programs supported by the Rotary Club, including five annual Columbia County scholarships, coordination and support of two high-school Interact clubs and sponsorship of more than 300 G.E.D. tests for area high-school drop outs.

Spring Fling tickets cost $35 and can be purchased by calling Bravo at (706) 736-3020, Randy Ripkey at (706) 860-0868, or Bruce Wright at (706) 651-7332. Some tickets also will be available at the door.
