Kirk receives FAMU scholarship

Purgeon Kirk, top fullback of the Blanchard High School Bulldogs, received a four-year athletic scholarship to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla. Kirk, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kirk Sr., scored 60 touchdowns, had 20 two-point conversions, threw 25 touchdown passes and gained more than 4,000 yards rushing.

Kirk stands about 6-feet, 1-inch tall and weighs 215 pounds. At FAMU, he will continue to be a running back and will major in physical education.

Soldier awarded Bronze Star

Army SFC Felix Perez Ramos, son of Juan Perez Rigau of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, received his second award of the Bronze Star Medal during ceremonies in Vietnam on Dec. 30.

Ramos earned the star for outstanding meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force in Vietnam. He is a mess steward in Headquarters Company of the 63rd Signal Brigade. His wife, Elizabeth, lives in Grovetown.
