UGA honors

Chris Newhouse , a Uni-versity of Georgia student from Evans, has been chosen to be a student judge for the 2008 Peabody Awards, which will take place June 16 in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

Established in 1940 and administered by UGA's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Peabody Awards are the oldest honor in television and radio.

Erin D. Beasley , a fourth-year student in speech communication at UGA, was named first runner-up in the 2008 Miss University of Georgia Scholarship Pageant. Beasley, daughter of Dean and Laraine Beasley, of Martinez, was one of 27 women competing in the pageant, held Jan. 12.

Rachel Maria Howard , of Martinez, has been named a Presidential Scholar for the 2007 fall term at UGA because of her superior academic accomplishment and a 4.0 grade point average.

Mercer honors

Ryan Blackburn , of Evans, earned All Academic for the spring 2007 semester at Mercer University. He is in his junior year and is on the golf team. He is a 2004 graduate of Lakeside High School and is the son of Ernie and Karen Blackburn, of Evans.

Katherine Elizabeth Mudrak , of Evans, has been named to the 2007 fall dean's list at Mercer. She is the daughter of Brian and Margaret Mudrak and is a 2006 honor graduate of Greenbrier High School.
