Several projects get go-ahead

Columbia County Planning Commission approved the first phase for a section of the River Island development Thursday.

Situated next to the Savan-nah River off Blackstone Camp Road in Evans, the work will include 56 houses built on about 28 acres.

The board also approved a plat for a series of cottages to be built on Jessie Road.

The planing board also approved the rezoning of 1.5 acres of residential property on Phillips Drive for use by Augusta Christian Schools.

In addition, school officials received a revision to their site plan to allow for adding five portable classrooms to the Augusta Christian campus. The revision lets the school demolish an existing home and cottage, add a playground and build a road to connect the new buildings to Phillips Drive.

Other rezonings approved by the planning commission include a 3.2-acre parcel on Industrial Park Drive from residential to industrial uses, and about a half-acre on Old Ferry Road from residential to commercial.
