I am writing to tell you and your readers how proud I am of the city of Grovetown and the vision that the city's leaders have demonstrated over the past 20 years or so.
Now the city is on the cusp of a new generation of leadership and an entirely new set of challenges. This new leadership recognizes the significance of the accomplishments of the past and has committed to build on the vision of its predecessors with new, bold plans and goals for the city's future. It's an exciting time to live and work in Grovetown.
A big part of the work to be done involves building pride and a sense of community spirit. That's why city residents, and others who call the Grovetown area home, are so pleased and honored that the Columbia County Board of Education is considering naming its newest high school for the city - Grovetown High School!
Sounds great, doesn't it? What a way to honor those who have worked so hard to put a solid public infrastructure in place and to attract development, residents and businesses to the city. What a way to reward the patience of those who sent their children to high school in neighboring Harlem for so many years. What a way to honor the city's history as well as heralding its future as a growing, thriving community.
The very face of Grovetown will begin to change soon. Its business community will soon awaken to its potential and, with a new Grovetown High School to replace the one we lost decades ago, its community spirit will soon swell with pride. We invite all those who have only seen Grovetown from the outside to join with us as we build a thriving little city here - a fine place to live, work and raise our families.
We ask that the Columbia County Board of Education hold fast to its apparent conviction that Grovetown should have a namesake high school. It means so much to all of us and to our future.
We will be so proud of you and so thankful that you recognize that the Grovetown community, from Columbia Road to Johns Street, from Fort Gordon to Euchee Creek, has arrived and deserves its own educational centerpiece - Grovetown High School.
Having a namesake high school just seems like a natural thing to happen in the growth of a community.
