Cited as a departure from the "traditional symphony concert experience," the Augusta Symphony's Columbia County Music Series will feature eclectic ensembles representing different musical genres and will be presented in an intimate setting.

The Augusta Symphony's second concert season in Columbia County opens Saturday, with tickets on sale now at www.augustasymphony.org, or by calling (706) 826-4705. The series will feature four concerts: on Saturday, and Jan. 19, Feb. 23 and March 29 at the Columbia County Library's Jabez Hardin Performing Arts Center.

"This series was initiated in the 2006-07 season to celebrate and perform in the opening of the acoustically-fine Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center and to meet the increasing demand for high-quality, live musical performances in Columbia County," said Christine Riffle, marketing manager for the Augusta Symphony.

Riffle said the Columbia County series has received strong community support with sold-out audiences.

"An important part of any community, a strong arts presence adds to and reflects the vibrancy and quality of life for residents of those communities," said Riffle. "Given the tremendous support for this music series during its debut season, the symphony is confident Columbia County residents will continue their support of the symphony's performances."

The Augusta Virtuosi, the area's premier string orchestra, and chamber ensembles for winds, strings and percussion will open Saturday's performance. The series also includes performances by renowned jazz trombonist, and Waynesboro native Wycliffe Gordon and pianist Eric Reed on Jan. 19; comedic vocalists Hudson Shad on Feb. 23, and duo-pianists Marina Lomazov and Joseph Rackers on March. 29. All of the concerts begin at 7:30 p. m.

"The Columbia County Music Series introduces audiences to various genres of music," said Riffle. "One of the symphony's objectives is to attract patrons of these concerts to attend the symphony's other concert series."

Tickets for the Columbia County series cost $95, while single concert tickets cost $30 each.
