Farm census
The 1959 Census of Agriculture, conducted in fall 1959 in Columbia County, counted 425 farms, according to the report issued by the Bureau of the Census.
Total Columbia County land in farms was 101,800 acres. The average size of farms was 239.5 acres. The average value of farms (land and buildings) in the county was $18,393.
Of the county's farm operators, 239 owned their farms, 63 owned part of the land and rented additional acreage, and 116 were tenant farmers.
The average age of farm operators in the county was 53 years. There were 86 farm operators 65 or more years of age.
Of the 425 farms in the county, 141 were commercial farms.
Donkey basketball
On Thursday night at 7:30, in the Harlem Gym, the Indiana-Illinois Donkey Ball Co. will furnish donkeys for a basketball game.
Local boys will ride the donkeys and attempt to play basketball.
Advance tickets are now on sale by the Harlem FFA chapter. Tickets are 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults.
CD meeting
Mrs. Al Nagy, Grovetown director of Civil Defense, conducted two study sessions on Home Preparedness for Civil Defense in the past two weeks.
Under the sponsorship of the Mothers Club, mothers prepared talks on various topics outlined in the Civil Defense program and led discussions.
Grovetown already has two generators to be used in case of disaster, and plans are being made for a defense shelter.
Everyone is urged to study all Civil Defense literature and be prepared in case of an atomic bomb or other disasters.
