What became the biggest night in recent memory for the Evans football team also served as a banner evening for Evans senior Chloe Kirby.

The 17-year-old Martinez resident was crowned the 2007 Evans High School Homecoming Queen at halftime during Evans' football game with Statesboro on Friday night. Kirby was one of 10 seniors on the Homecoming court, and said she was shocked when her name was announced.

"It was an amazing night. I really didn't expect my name to be called, and then to see us win the football game, too, just topped the night off," she said. "It's such an honor to be able to represent Evans High School this way."

Kirby, a lifelong Martinez resident, was escorted by her father, Luther Kirby. She attended Martinez Elementary and Evans Middle and has spent the past four years involved in several clubs and organizations including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the International Thespians Society and the Evans senior student council.

Kirby also spent three years playing volleyball and swimming for Evans High.

She said she hopes to attend Georgia College and State University next year and pursue a career in broadcast journalism.

Evans football player Taylor Hooven was named the 2007 Homecoming King at a pep rally earlier in the week.
