Group reorganizes

A reorganizational meeting of the Columbia County Historical Society has been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Board of Education Building in Appling.

At this meeting the membership will adopt a constitution and bylaws, nominate and elect officers, schedule regular quarterly meeting dates and appoint an attorney to draw up incorporation papers.

Tankersley feted Columbia County Sheriff Edward Tankersley was honored Wednesday, Sept. 10, at a dinner held at the Columbia County Merchants Association Building in Martinez.

Citizens from all sections of the county were on hand to pay tribute to the retiring sheriff, who has headed law enforcement in Columbia County for the past 18 years.

Tankersley and his wife, Irma, were presented plaques and gifts of appreciation for their many years of service to the people of Columbia County.

New coach named

Columbia Junior High defeated Paul Knox of North Augusta 29-0 in its first game of the season, giving Coach Lonnie Morris Jr. a victory in his debut as head football coach.

Morris, head varsity baseball coach and B-team football coach at Monticello High for the past year, was recently named the head football coach and athletic director at Columbia Junior High for the 1980-81 school year.
