Lions in Brief

Posted: Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Head coach: Bruce Lane (sixth season)

//

2006 record: 10-3

2006 highlight: A year after winning the school's first football state title, the Lions returned to the SCISA Class AAA state championship game in 2006. Augusta Christian lost to Hammond 28-17 in the title game, but a 10-3 record easily made them the county's top program.

Last trip to postseason: 2006

Breakout season: Senior Jay Harmon spent most of his junior year as a fullback in the shadows of runningback Kyle Meeks. Harmon is a more than adequate replacement.

Player to watch: With a year of experience under his belt, Tyler Bourdo will show Lions fans how to scramble, throw and just basically lead his team this year.

Strength: Along with the returning starters in the backfield, the offensive line has even more experience. Senior Zach Cooper (6-3, 290) will lead an offensive line that includes veteran blockers Chase Corbin (three-year starter) and Zach Herzwurm (two-year starter).

Weakness: It won't be easy for head coach Bruce Lane to find replacements for last year's starting secondary. Sophomore Jared Austin is a good start, but the leadership factor doesn't compare to last year's starting pair of seniors Will Wright and Taylor Hensley.
