Support Paul for president 'if freedom and liberty aren't empty words'

I am writing to urge the readers of The Columbia County News-Times to seriously consider supporting Dr. Ron Paul in the contest for the Republican nomination for the presidency.

Paul, currently representing a Texas district in the U.S. House, has a consistent record of taking his oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States seriously. He has never voted for a tax increase, nor has he supported any expansion of federal power at the expense of the rights of the states and the people. He favors the enforcement of our border laws.

He is completely opposed to "gay marriage," and he has demonstrated time and again in his public career that he holds human life to be sacred from birth to natural death.

Compared with the other candidates, both in his own party and on the Democratic side, he is the only person who has entered this race who is genuinely saying something different - both about foreign policy and the burdens of government internally.

Arrogantly, much of the media have taken to themselves the presumptive right to decide who a "Tier 1" or "viable" candidate is; much of the media has largely ignored Paul, focusing instead, for the Republican nomination, on the likes of John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. Were any of these men elected, one could expect more of the same with regard to foreign policy.

In the case of McCain and Thompson, you have men who supported a so-called campaign finance reform law that restricts freedom of speech; with Giuliani, you have a man sees nothing fundamentally wrong with homosexuality and abortion. In the case of Mitt Romney, while I have had good friends from Massachusetts, we need look no further than the political and social conditions of his State to see that he is unfit to preside over our union.

If you want more of the same - more debt, more government growth, and more foreign wars that appear endless - vote for one of the "top tier" individuals. If you want socialism, vote for whomever the Democrats nominate.

If freedom and liberty aren't empty words to you, then vote for Ron Paul. He represents the best traditions of American politics; if you want a consistent and authentic conservative in office who will take the Constitution, personal liberty, and tax reform seriously, support this man. At least consider doing so.
