Preparations are under way for an annual event targeted at new residents to the area.

"I hear a lot that there's nothing to do in Augusta," said Thom Tuckey, the executive director for the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon, one of the sponsors of the Community Expo, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Gordon Club at Fort Gordon.
So far, about 75 businesses and organizations have indicated their interest in attending the event, which is designed to help newcomers acclimate to the area and learn what Augusta has to offer.
The annual event has had several names, including Putting U in A_gusta, during its decadelong existence. Last year, there were about 90 presenters.
Although the event is at Fort Gordon, it is not limited to military families, Tuckey said.
"It's for those who are new to the area, affiliated with the installation or not, and also for those who have been here for a while," he said.
Some of the organizations will have booths specific to the military, but organizations such as Sacred Heart Cultural Center and Historic Augusta will have presentations for all residents.
Papa John's will provide free pizza, and Coca-Cola will provide beverages.
The event is also sponsored by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Gordon Garrison.
