While many parents are scrambling to purchase trendy items for their children going back to school, there are some families in Columbia County who are in dire need of basic clothing.

The Children's Resource Center, operated by the nonprofit Columbia County Foundation for Children, has been in existence for more than 10 years at 6347 Columbia Road. The Children's Resource Center offers discount prices on household items, toys, books and used clothing.

"The difference between donating to our center instead of the Salvation Army or Goodwill is that the items help people in our area and our prices are more reasonable for those in need," said Janice Smith, a worker at the center. "There is a high demand for clothing items right now because it's back-to-school time."

There is a $1 bag sale on summer clothes until Aug. 30, and fall items will start to sell in September. Donations to the center are tax-deductible.

The Resource Center is open every Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. For information, call the Children's Resource Center at (706) 541-2849.
