FFA boys head to state

The Future Farmers of America Quartet and Public Speaker will attend the Camp and State finals at Camp Jackson next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Quartet is composed of William Swift, Joe Wheeler, Pace Jordan and Lonnie Melton. William Swift is the public speaker who will compete in the finals.

The boys will be accompanied by their instructor, Tom Whitfield, head of the Vocational Agriculture Department of Harlem High School.

Lanier promoted

Frank T. Lanier, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lanier of Martinez, was promoted May 16 to seaman, United States Navy, while serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Oriskany.

The Oriskany will visit ports in japan, Hawaii and the Philippines before returning to its home port here in the fall.

Atlanta meeting set for June 17

The Rev. J.E. Cook, pastor of the Harlem Baptist Church and chairman of the Infantile Paralysis Foundation for Columbia County, announced that Mrs. C.D. Armistead and Mrs. Steiner Branch Jr., both of Grovetown, will represent the Columbia County Chapter at a meeting in Atlanta on June 17.

The meeting will be held at the Drinkler Plaza Hotel and will be conducted in a form of a workshop.

Mr. Basil O'Connor, the national president, will be present and will participate in the workshop.

Mrs. Armistead and Mrs. Branch will report the activities of the workshop at the next council meeting which is to be held in Columbia County.
