Girls soccer season saw serious level of success

Heider, Nichols earn top honors

Although the 2006-07 soccer season ended prematurely for most of Columbia County's soccer teams, it did bring some successes.

Harlem's girls made a repeat trip to the Class AAA state quarterfinals with a nail-biting, double-overtime victory over Perry in the second round of the playoffs.

Then there was Greenbrier, who dethroned Lakeside for the Region 3-AAAA championship. The Lady Panthers grabbed a second-place region finish and another state playoff appearance, despite losing star senior Ashley Wray to a season-ending head injury.

Evans finished third in the region and brought home an 11-6 overall record after another playoff appearance.

Augusta Prep earned a home playoff game, while Augusta Christian kicked off its first season of girls soccer.

Perhaps the biggest story of the year in girls soccer was Greenbrier's record of 16-3 (tied for second best in school history), despite losing 11 seniors from last year's team. The team's 11-0 region record and 58-2 goals advantage in region play showed how dominant it was.

That leaves nothing but The Columbia County News-Times Girls Soccer All-County Teams:

First Team

GK - Tiffany Nichols, Greenbrier, Sr.

She boasted a .53 goals against average and only gave up two goals in region play with 11 shutout wins.

D - Elena Freeman, Augusta Prep, Sr.

A five-year starter who's been named to every all-tournament team Augusta Prep's played in for the past three years.

D - Keri Wright, Greenbrier, Sr.

A position change didn't slow her down at all. The co-captain started all 19 games and served as the backbone of the Greenbrier defense.

D - Caitlin Clark, Lakeside, Sr.

The starting sweeper led the Lady Panther defense and will play college soccer at Clayton State.

D - Mary Kate Lollar, Greenbrier, Jr.

The All-Region player will be back for another year on a strong defensive line for the Lady Wolfpack.

MF - Whitney Martinez, Harlem, Sr.

She scored 13 goals, led the team with 20 assists and was also a key team leader.

MF - Christie Hart, Harlem, Sr.

Her 14 goals led a Lady Bulldog team that went further than any other Columbia County girls soccer team this season.

MF - Renee Redington, Lakeside, Sr.

A versatile and fearless player with 13 goals and four assists on the season.

MF - Jessica Lewis, Greenbrier, So.

She scored five goals and dished out four assists to help the Lady Wolfpack win another region title.

F - Alex Cohen, Greenbrier, Fr.

Her team-leading 16 goals and 12 assists ensure Greenbrier will have a high-powered offense for years to come.

F - Tarah Henderson, Evans, Jr.

She scored 35 goals in 17 games. Wow.

F - Anne Randall Hatcher, Lakeside, Sr.

Her 13 goals and five assists were good enough for team MVP honors.

F - Jaimy Koet, Harlem, Sr.

She scored 12 goals this season, and none was bigger than the lone goal in a double-overtime state playoff win over Perry.
