Local National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners named

Jian Huang, of Martinez, a senior at Lakeside High School, has been named a winner of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship award. Huang's probable career field is computer science.

Yi Liu, of Martinez, a senior at Lakeside High School, has been named a winner of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship award. Liu's probable career field is medicine.

These Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a pool of about 15,000 finalists in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. They were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.

Wesleyan College student recognized by Phi Kappa Phi

Lauren Elser, of Martinez, a first-year student majoring in political science and French, was recognized April 5 by Phi Kappa Phil Honor Society. She is the daughter of Fred Elser, of Martinez, and Rosemary Chandler, of Evans. Elser is a graduate of Greenbrier High School.

University of South Carolina fall President's List

Katherine Lindsay Defer and Austin David Smallwood, both of Evans, were recently named to the University of South Carolina's 2006 fall semester President's List. To appear on the list, students must take 12 semester credit-hours and earn a grade-point average of 4.0.

University of South Carolina fall Dean's List

Brian Douglas Bufford, of Evans, Carly Leah Jackson, of Evans, Brendan Joseph Alberts, of Grovetown, Jennifer Savannah Keaton, of Martinez, Joseph Patrick Korwin, of Martinez, and Miriam Lee Lentz, of Martinez, were recently named to the University of South Carolina's 2006 fall semester Dean's List. For the list, students must take 12 semester credit-hours and obtain a grade-point average of 3.5 (3.25 for freshmen).

2007 Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad grant recipient

Shivan Bhatt, of Martinez, son of Pankaj and Charu Bhatt, has been awarded an Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad grant for 2007. He attends the University of Georgia and will participate in a program in Arusha, Tanzania, through the Global Service Corps. The Study Abroad Grants are designed to recognize and assist undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty grants valued at $1,000 each are awarded annually.

The Savannah College of Art and Design Dean's List Winter

The following students were named to the Dean's List at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga., for winter quarter 2007. Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the Dean's List.

David Arthur Watkins, of Appling, architecture major; Carolyn Margaret Horne, of Augusta, illustration major; Hannah Naomi Inouye, of Evans, illustration major; Amanda Marie Arthur, of Grovetown, film and television major; Eric Thomas Robinson, of Grovetown, graphic design major; and Gabriel Antonio Vega, of Grovetown, animation major.

Quad/Graphics Freshmen Scholarship award

Kelsey Robertson, of Greenbrier High School, has been awarded a Quad/Graphics Freshmen Scholarship to attend Georgia Southern University's Graphic Communications Management program in Statesboro. Kelsey will enter into the program beginning the fall 2007 semester.

Two Lakeside seniors are Promising Scholars

Lakeside High School seniors Muktha Natrajan and Mili Shah are two of 19 high school seniors in Georgia identified as Promising Scholars by the University of Georgia's Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities. Each Promising Scholar receives a certificate and a $250 stipend.

2007 Aquinas High School Columbia County graduates

Aquinas High School, Augusta, will hold its 50th Commencement Exercises on Sunday at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, at 8 p.m. (Tickets are required.) Everyone is welcome to attend the Baccalaureate Mass at St. Mary at 2:30 p.m. on the same day.

Valedictorian: Sarah Marie Skidmore, daughter of Peter and Donna Skidmore, has plans to attend Rockhurst University and major in secondary education. Other Columbia County graduates are Brian Patrick Alberts, Sarah Elizabeth Bishop, Katherine Nell Bowles, Joseph Robert Campbell, Michael Stephen Cardwell, Michael Louis Gubosh (honor graduate), Maria Alejandra Hoyos, Sean Michael McLarnon, Jacob Jeffery Palgut, Javis Nathaniel Presley, Kaythrine Amanda Ramp, Ashleigh Lauren Rhodes, Sarah Albertine Robson, Nicholas Shannon Ryan, Theodore Maxwell Smith, Soo-Ji Jung Tipton and Graham Michael Whisenhunt.

UGA student initiated into Phi Beta Kappa

Peter R. Caruana, son of Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Caruana, of Martinez, has been initiated into the Alpha chapter, Phi Beta Kappa, University of Georgia. He is majoring in biology and is a 2003 graduate of Lakeside High School.
