Students get math competition honors
Several area students recently received honors at a MATHCOUNTS competition that was sponsored by the Augusta Chapter of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers along with the assistance of Augusta State University's math department. Greenbrier Middle School took first place, led by Sheila Perun. The student who took first place was Tony Bonitatibus, also a student at Greenbrier Middle. Along with Tony, Greenbrier's team boasted Cameron Gallahue, Katelyn Hatfield and Matt Keskula. The next highest scoring students, Elijah Coleman and David Evans, are from the CSRA Home Education Association. Through their accomplishments, these members represented Augusta at the state competition at Zoo Atlanta on March 24. Other local schools participating in the event included Grovetown Middle School, Episcopal Day School and Augusta Preparatory Day School.
Programming team to compete
Mercer University's Binary Bears computer programming team has earned a place in the 2007 ACM International Computer Programming Contest. The team was one of just 21 schools from North America to take part in the competition, which was held in Tokyo, Japan in March. The three-man team includes senior Britt Daniel, a computer science and math major from Grovetown. The team took second place in the 2006 ACM Southeastern Programming Contest on Oct. 27, at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and earned an at-large berth in the finals. The team answered nine of 10 problems, and only came in second based on the time to completion, losing to the University of Central Florida.
