Construction contract awarded
Bids have been opened for about five miles of base and surfacing on Columbia Road, according to a State Highway Department release this week. Work will be done by the W.C. Wall Construction Co. of McCormick, S.C., which bid the lowest on the 4.995-mile project, with a bid of $45,766.50.
Lord is top speller
Charles Lord of Harlem is the champion speller in Columbia County. He recently won a contest and will represent the county in the district contest to be held in Washington on April 6. Lord received a $25 U.S. Savings Bond as a prize.
Others finishing in the top four were Gwendolyn Videtto of Evans, Linda Shaw of Palling, and Mary Rose Wilcox of Grovetown.
