The Columbia County Planning Commission gave its blessing Thursday to a rezoning request by an Evans concrete company for new office space.

Jerry Ashmore, the owner of Ashmore Concrete Contractors at 5100 Pierce Court off Industrial Park Drive, requested the rezoning of 6.57 acres from Manufacturing-2 to Planned Unit Development.

Ashmore said his company plans to construct three office buildings totaling more than 14,000 square feet.

Most of the office space will be used by the company, with a portion reserved for other companies to potentially lease, he said. Ashmore Concrete will continue to use the site for manufacturing operations, according to the company's rezoning request.

The request will go before the Columbia County Board of Commissioners for final approval April 17.

In other business, the planning commission directed county planning staff to begin the process of a county-initiated rezoning at 516 N. Belair Road from Commercial-1 to the denser Commercial-2. The site is the location of a Bruster's Ice Cream and is an island of C-1 in a sea of C-2 zoning, county planning Director Jeff Browning said.
