Lonnie Morris named fire chief
The Appling Jaycettes appointed Lonnie Morris as acting fire chief of the Appling Area Volunteer Fire Department in a special community meeting held on March 6.
The Jaycettes are sponsoring and helping organize the Appling-area Volunteer Fire department until permanent officers can be elected. When the officers are elected, the Fire Department will become self-supported. The Fire Department will primarily cover the Appling, Winfield and Leah areas of the county but will be on call for other parts of the county if a fire occurs.
Acting Chief Morris said a fire truck has been applied for through the State Forestry Department. Morris also said that once the fire department is properly organized and chartered, State Fire Coordinator Charlie Brown and his staff will begin training classes for local volunteer firemen.
A final meeting for organizing and electing officers for the fire department will be held March 31, 1969, at 7:30 p.m. in the Appling Community Center.
