Bond issue set

Columbia County voters will go to the polls next Wednesday, Feb. 15, 1961, to decide the outcome of a $230,000 school bond issue that will be used to relieve crowded conditions in the county schools.

The proposed building program calls for a new 14-classroom elementary school in Martinez and additional classrooms at most other schools in the county.

Boy Scout Day

The Harlem Scouts will be among 600 Scouts of the Georgia-Carolina Council who will attend the fifth annual Boy Scout Day at the Army Signal Training Center on Feb. 11, 1961.

Among activities at the center, the boys will participate in mock parachute jumps, witness judo and aerial demonstrations, ride in Jeeps, eat in the mess hall and view motion pictures.

Disease takes toll

Out of 95 deaths in Columbia County in 1959, 42, or 44.2 percent, were attributed to disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

Heart diseases were responsible for 52.9 percent of all deaths in Georgia during 1959, more than all other causes combined, the Georgia Heart Association reported.

Of the 33,376 deaths in Georgia in 1959, 17,646 were caused by diseases of the heart and circulatory system, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.
