Students best at policing themselves

Posted: Wednesday, January 31, 2007

While it's obvious children can misbehave, it's also heartening to know that even more children know when to do the right thing.

That was the case recently at Harlem Middle School, when students revealed that a sixth-grader was carrying a gun on campus.

The pistol, thankfully, wasn't loaded. Acting on tips circulating around the building, school officials found the weapon in the student's backpack. He was arrested, and the school will recommend expulsion.

Teachers can't be everywhere and see everything; that's why it's so important for students to help police themselves. Congratulations to those Harlem Middle kids for standing up for themselves.
