Schools accredited

Principals in the Columbia County School System have been presented with their Certificates of Accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school system is one of the few in Georgia to have all of its schools, both elementary and secondary, fully accredited.

Runners compete

The West Side 10-Kilometer run, sponsored by the Augusta Athletic Association, was held Jan. 22 at the old Lock and Dam Park.

The event drew 30 participants, and Evans Junior High School track coach Gene Strong won first place overall.

Fifteen-year-old Merry McDonald won first place in the novice group; Richard Christensen won the 17-and-under group; Larry Little won the 18- to 22-year-old group; Gene Strong won the 22- to 35-year-old group; and Bill Hickman won the 36-year-old group.

Owens open house

State Rep. Ray Owens held an open house Saturday to gain feedback from citizens and to share news on current house bills.

Owens passed out coffee and doughnuts to visitors while he spoke about topics such as the need for a landfill for Harlem, land use tax and the sales tax.
