Runners brave cold
Evans Junior High School track coach Gene Strong took first place overall in the Augusta Athletic Association's West Side 10K Run at the old Lock and Dam Park.
The event drew approximately 30 participants on the chilly day, with 15-year-old Merry McDonald winning the novice category, Richard Christensen winning the 17-under category, Larry Little winning 18-22, Strong winning 22-35, and Bill Hickman winning 36 and older.
Though placing last in the event, 56-year-old Dr. H.W. Merchant was awarded a medal for his endeavors.
Occupation tax collected
The Columbia County Planning and Zoning Office has collected thus far, from 36 applicants, $2,374 in occupational taxes for the month of January, according to Steve Szablewski, zoning administrator.
Finalists named
Three Evans High School students have been recognized for their outstanding achievements by being named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
The finalists are:
Allen David Clabo, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David A. Clabo; David Geeter, the son of Christine Geeter; and Craig Litherland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford R. Litherland.
Officers installed
The Martinez Sertoma Club received its charter last Saturday night at the West Lake Country Club. Officers include Earl Barton, president; Roy Ward, vice president in charge of membership; Mike Carpenter, vice president in charge of sponsorship; Bruce Weathers, secretary; and Leonard Dye, sergeant-at-arms.
The newly formed Sertoma Club was sponsored by the Masters City Sertoma Club, of Augusta.
