Masked woman attempts armed robbery in parking lot
//
Columbia County authorities were still searching Tuesday for a woman they say tried to rob another woman Thursday afternoon outside a Martinez grocery store.
A 60-year-old Martinez woman told deputies a masked woman approached her with a knife or screwdriver and demanded money in the parking lot of the Food Lion on South Belair Road at about 1:20 p.m. The Martinez woman screamed and the suspect fled the scene, Columbia County sheriff's Maj. Rick Whitaker said in an e-mail.
The suspect was further described as a slender white woman dressed in all black.
The following accounts were taken from reports filed with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Two go-carts taken from local amusement park
A NASCAR-inspired go-cart was reported stolen Wednesday from the former Funsville amusement park in Martinez.
Ed Smith, a co-owner of the new Adventure Crossing entertainment center on Wheeler Road, told deputies he discovered a $4,500 NASCART go-cart had been stolen and a second removed from the race track. The second cart was later recovered in a wooded area of the property.
Smith told deputies that vandals also broke into a batting cage and discharged a fire extinguisher.
Multiple suspects might have been involved because the carts weigh several hundred pounds each, and have to be lifted to be removed from the track area.
All-terrain vehicle stolen from yard of Evans retiree
An Evans retiree told deputies Thursday that someone stole an all-terrain vehicle from her yard.
The 65-year-old from the 5100 block of Huntfield Road told deputies the orange-and-black Alpha Sport Cobra 90 four-wheeler was taken sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
